Theme walks in the Basque Country

Pastoralism from prehistory to the present day:

Okabe-aout-2012he Iraty forest and the Okabe Neolithic burial ground:

An exploration of Europe’s biggest beech forest and its Neolithic burial ground; on the summit you’ll find twenty cromlechs and a 360° view from the Ocean to the 1st Pyrenean summit at over 2000m, the Pic D’Orhy, and beyond to the snow-capped Pic D’Anie.

Highlights: a visit to the Iraty shepherds’ association hut to see an exhibition on the life of mountain shepherds and to buy some very high-quality cheese. Possibility of a snack halt by a lake or river for the children. A visit to a magnificent 17th century painted chapel.

1hr15 by car from Villa Kaioa to Bidart

The “Penas d’Itxusi” or the vultures’ cliffs:

A magnificent walk, with vultures’ nesting sites, crumbling cliffs, 300m waterfalls, meadows and rocks where a number of flocks graze free. We walk above the biggest concentration of griffon vultures in the country.

Highlights: possibility of visiting the church in Itxasou, one of the finest churches in the Basque Country, and its cemetery with its discoid stelae; stop off at a farm to buy some sheep’s cheese and cherry jam.

40 min by car from Villa Kaioa to Bidart

Le “Petit Pic du Mondarrain”, the viewpoint over the Basque Country:

From its summit you can see Biarritz and Bayonne all the way to the Landes.
A number of Pottoks (wild horses) and Betisoak (wild cows) live in freedom on the mountain. On the summit there are some superb climbing rocks and the remains of a fortified tower.

Highlights: possibility of visiting the church in Itxasou, one of the finest churches in the Basque Country, and its cemetery with its discoid stelae; stop off at a farm to buy some sheep’s cheese and cherry jam.

30 min by car from Villa Kaioa to Bidart

Between the sea and the mountains: Pasaia/ San Sebastian:

In the footsteps of Lafayette and Victor Hugo.

We’ll visit the old town of Pasaia Donibane (where Victor Hugo stayed and from where Lafayette set out to help the American revolutionaries).
We cross the bay in a small boat then walk along the shore to San Sebastian.

Highlights: the boat crossing, the possibility of a swim, tapas when we arrive, the constant view of the Ocean.
